best guns to buy

As with any product, some people wonder about what gun they should get next or if the one they bought really is all that good. To some degree, "good" is subjective; good for whom, exactly? And for what?

But that said, there are known knowns, as it were, things that can be depended upon almost always to work. Here are 5 guns you'll never go wrong with.

Glock 19

glock 19

Look, the Glock 19 isn't perfect, but they run like clockwork. The gun is big enough to be used as service pistol, has great carrying capacity for its size and while not match-accurate by any means is more than accurate enough for just about anything you can use it for. They eat whatever you feed them and don't really need an incredible amount of upkeep.

Since they're also relatively cheap to acquire (about $600 in most stores) and are in basically every gun store nationwide, that makes them one of the best semi-autos you can get. You can find finer guns, to be sure, but as rugged, reliable and available? No other pistol comes close.

Remington 870 Or Mossberg 500

best mossberg and remington

The Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 shotguns are the standards by which all others are judged. If it isn't as reliable, who cares? If it can't take a beating, so what? If it's too much of a pain to aim well, then it's not much good.

Neither of these guns costs more than $500 in most stores. Both can be customized to within an inch of their lives. Both are equally adept as personal protection guns or as hunting guns. Plenty of waterfowlers keep going back to their 870 or 500 year over year while their semi-auto sits in a safe.

Rugged, reliable, accurate, and eminently affordable. There's a reason they've been best-sellers for more than 50 years.

Smith And Wesson Shield

best sw shield

Easily one of the most popular concealed carry pistols of all time by this point. The Smith and Wesson M&P Shield has been a perennial best-seller since it was released in 2012. Small, slim pistols were not known for their reliability or ease of shooting until fairly recently, and the Shield is easily one of the best of its class.

Very few pistols are as easy to shoot relative to the size, nor come with the same diversity of factory features, and very few guns are as reliable or shootable at the same price point. S&W asks $469, but you'll usually find them for $400 or less.

You can find finer, but you won't find any as good for the same in sticker.

Savage 110

best savage arms rifle

The Savage 110 is one of the two bolt action rifles that were designed to deliver the same accuracy of the Winchester Model 70 at a bargain price. (The other is the Remington 700.) The Savage 110 has long been known for out-of-the-box accuracy in the same class as many custom guns, along with the Accutrigger system that's second to none.

You can find cheaper bolt guns that are about as accurate. The Savage AXIS line is well-regarded, as is the Winchester XPR, Mossberg Patriot and other budget rifles. The 110 commands a little more in sticker, sure, but you aren't going to find anything better for less.

S&W Model 10

best sw model 10

There's a reason the Smith and Wesson Model 10 has been in production since 1898. It holds 6 of .38 Special, so it's shootable for just about anyone. It can run +P ammunition without too much issue, so it's a viable choice of self-defense pistol.

It has a double-action trigger that may turn some people off, but it smoothes with age unlike any other.

This was the Glock of its day, and police departments and militaries all over the world issued the Model 10 - formerly called the Hand Ejector model - from the turn of the 20th century into the 1990s, when the last of the revolvers were phased out of police service. New models are pricey, with an MSRP over $800, but used models can be had for less than half that amount and have decades of life still left in them.
